Fellowship & Externship Program

The Center for Social Impact + Innovation is excited to invite applications to GCNYC’s Fellowship & Externship Program!

Up to two Fellows will be appointed for the period April 20 to July 20, 2022 and shall have the privilege to enroll in Business Strategy for the Common Good (meeting Wednesdays 6pm EST). Working with the Center Director, Fellows will design and execute an Externship project that extends the Center’s capacity to serve the Common Good and advance Glasgow Caledonian University’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Glasgow Caledonian New York College offers Master’s of Science degrees in Business for Social Impact and Sustainability; Sustainable Fashion; and Risk, Resilience and Integrity Management. Fellows will benefit from a community of faculty, alumni, and graduate students committed to driving innovation and practical solutions for social benefit. Alumni are social entrepreneurs and sustainability strategists for corporations and non-profit organizations. Partners affiliated with the Center include Macy’s, PVH, and Forum for the Future.

The Fellowship and Externship Program is intended for exceptionally qualified college graduates or rising juniors or seniors who wish to advance their education and professional capabilities in social impact and sustainability before pursuing a graduate degree. This opportunity is intended for applicants who will be able to actively participate in the life of the College and would like to grow professionally through applied mentorship and study.

Fellows may apply credit requirements for any course they successfully complete if they are subsequently accepted to pursue a GCNYC M.S. degree. Depending solely on home institution requirements, fellows may be able to earn credit for the supervised externship.

GCNYC’s Fellowship Program:

GCNYC’s 2021 fellows worked along with the Center Director, Gastón de los Reyes, to execute projects that serve GCNYC’s Common Good mission and advance Glasgow Caledonian University’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

We are pleased to feature the projects of two of our fellows here, Rosa Hakim and Felipe Chiriboga:

Rosa Hakim’s Externship Project

Rosa Hakim’s Externship Project focused on gender bias in the workplace and its impact on company culture and performance. Specifically, the center of her research was the professional experiences of women at GCNYC. Hakim chose to explore this project due to her passion for women’s empowerment and her interest in career progression within the GNYC community. The project was broken down into two parts, the first was a survey that she used to gain insights on alumni engagements.

After meeting with Kerri Quinn, Director of Academic Engagement at GCNYC, Michelle Gabriel, Director of Career Services and Strategic Partnerships at GCNYC, and Suzanne Wagstaff, Director of Alumni Relations at Washington University, she was able to host an alumni event.

An Alumni Panel was conducted on June 21st, 2021, and included panelists: Mariza Scotch, Alexandra Williams, and Julie Mastrarrigo. Below is a video from her panel that consists of some of her findings. See Hakim’s final report here.

Felipe Chiriboga’s Externship project

Felipe Chiriboga’s Externship project was a two-part study focused on a potential screening program for diabetic retinopathy to be deplored first in Ecuador. Due to Felipe’s job at the Fundación Oftalmológica del Valle, a non-profit in Yaruquí dedicated to providing accessible eye care to patients, and his knowledge on the growing number of cases of diabetic retinopathy this is his way to combat the disease. The first part of his study is qualitative research including interviews with diabetics, diabetic retinopathy patients, and healthcare professionals. The second part is where Chiriboga implemented a pilot screening program using considerations from his findings in part one. Although the fellowship has concluded, Chiriboga has continued to work on this study with the Fundación Oftalmológica del Valle. Below are photographs from testing his research. See Chariboga’s full report here.
